Homeopathic Remedies for Foreign Travel

Did you know that homeopathic remedy kits are small, portable, light in weight , and powerful when it comes to medicine for travel and travel ailments? Homeopathic remedies can be a life-saver when it comes to exotic travel and preserving your physical health and comfort while away.

There are remedies which are effective in treating the following:

Diarrhoea, food poisoning, fevers, vomiting, dehydration, constipation, bloating/distension, indigestion, heartburn, headache, injuries and accident, strains and sprains, reactions to insect bites and stings, septic states, sunstroke and sunburn, jet-lag, exhaustion, and all manner of infectious illnesses.

You can purchase a Homeopathy Travel Kit easily in many different places. Inside the kit there is a leaflet which explains how to use homeopathy and gives you indications for choosing different medicines depending on the complaint. A person whose starting point is knowing nothing whatever about homeopathy, can prescribe safely, and with success and efficacy. Remedies work quickly. They are safe to take if one has a chronic disease or ongoing diagnosed illness as remedies do not interfere with medication. Nor do they interfere or counteract medication for malaria for example. They are easy to do not even need a glass of water to accompany a homeopathic pill or tablet. You take them by simply dissolving the pill or tablet in your mouth. Homeopathic remedies are not swallowed, they are absorbed over the mucous membranes of the mouth and throat.

I also recommend The World Travellers Guide to Homeopathy by Colin B. Lessell. If you are a journalist with postings world-wide, this is life-changing!

There are homeopathic 'alternatives' to virtually every immunisation which people receive prior to travel. Tetanus, Hep A and Hep B, Diptheria, Polio, Typhoid, Cholera, Malaria, Yellow fever, Typhus, Dengue Fever etc. The directions for how to use them are very simple. They are easy to transport and they cause no side-effects or adverse effects to your health. And yes, they are effective - they work. Nothing is 100% guaranteed but neither are the vaccines. I have advised people on their travel 'shots' for years ...not one person has come back to me reporting that they contracted one of these illnesses.

But if you decide that there is a risk in trusting 'homeoprophylaxis' which is what we call 'homeopathic vaccination/immunisation' and are getting shots and immunisations in preparation for your travel, then homeopathy can offer protection against side-effects from these immunisations. One of the first ports of call for protection against vaccine-damage is the remedy Thuja 30c. Take one dose immediately after your shot, and one about 12 hours later.

For all those using Malaria medication, which is known to be hard on the body , I advise that you take either a herbal tincture or a homeopathic remedy to support your liver. Your liver is responsible for detoxing harmful and unnecessary substances from the body. An efficient liver also happens to be excellent for preserving healthy immunity as well. Use Milk Thistle every day. Or try taking two of the Schuessler Cell Salts: Nat sulph and Nat-mur each day. Alternatively, you can try taking Sulphur 6x once in the morning and Nux-vomica 6x once in the evening for about 3 weeks.  Protecting your liver is one of the main steps to take against protecting yourself from symptoms and adverse side-effects from taking drugs or medication. Another simple protective step you can take is to drink plenty of clean, fresh water.

Prevention of illness is always better than cure. It is possible to discern who may be vulnerable to particular complaints through a thorough examination of the history of a person's health and the type of ailments they are prone to developing. People with a history of weak digestion, trouble with constipation and stomach distension, regular bouts of random food poisonings will most definitely not be free of trouble when they travel! People who have sensitive skin are in line for trouble too . People who have a diet which does not include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables each day will tend to have more acidity of the blood and thus attract more mosquito bites. They will be unlikely to have an incident-free trip as well.

So, what else can you do if you are planning on an exciting trip to a place you have always wanted to visit and are nervous about the health implications?
Do go and see a homeopath in your local area. Your homeopath will record your health level and prescribe a constitutional remedy to boost your immunity and your vitality prior to travel. An individualised tailor-made personal prescription will address any weaknesses you have and any minor physical ailments you have prior to your trip. This is the best protection you could have.

Other tips:

For prevention of mosquito bites:

  • wear tightly woven clothing (linens though light and cool, are loosely woven and can be penetrated by mosquitoes)
  • bring Essential Oil of Citronella which is an effective insect repellent
  • consume Garlic for 3 weeks prior to departure. This must not be the non-odourless kind, as the smell is the whole point!
  • balance your diet and the pH of your body. Eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid coffee, alcohol, and too much wheaten carbohydrate for a while. Take one tablespoon of Apple Cider Vinegar in a little warm water 3xdaily.  Take the Cell Salt: Nat-phos 6x every day.
  • Take the supplement Vitamin B1 Thiamine once daily before travel.
To boost your immune system if you don't attend a homeopath:
  • Take 1000mg of Vitamin C once daily. (Do not do this, if you have any kidney trouble or suffer regular kidney infections)
  • Take the herbal tincture Echinacea  every day. (Do not do this if you have a chronic diagnosed Auto-immune disorder such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or if you have previously had cancer)
Additional helps for your journey apart from your homeopathy travel kit:
  • Take Grapefruit Seed Extract with you. A powerful natural anti-biotic which you can use should you acquire any infection. You can apply it externally on your skin and can even wash food in water with drops of the Extract added to it.
  • Essential Oil of Lavender: antiseptic, immune stimulant, soothing sedative for sleep, wonderful for skin burn etc ...a very versatile oil to have.

Enjoy your travel experiences! I wish you well and safe on your journey with the following Irish blessing:

"May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face
The rains fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His Hand"

What is the difference between homeopathy and conventional medicine?

So many people ask this question, so I think it worth posting about!

  1. Homeopathic medicine has a set of guiding principles - it is a complete system of medicine in itself.  Where these principles are not applied, then the remedy or substance will not act 'homeopathically'. Homeopathy embraces a theory of underlying illness which includes two important factors: susceptibility to illness and constitutional inheritance ( a near-equivalent to 'genetics'). Both of these can be addressed in conjunction with the treatment of illness while under the care of a homeopath.
  2. Homeopathy has the power to act preventatively in health-care and address inheritance long before the onset of serious illness. It does not depend on tests and diagnoses. (Although diagnosis and information from test results is  helpful). This marks homeopathy as a unique system in all the world..where most natural therapies as well  as conventional medicine can only act once illness begins and starts to progress.
  3. The remedies prescribed according to these principles differ in their constitution from all other substances we frequently use for medication whether drug, supplement, or herb. They are prepared using a specific method. All substances from which remedies are derived are put through a process of dilution and succussion. Each substance is further and further diluted in water. In between each dilution, the solution is 'succussed' or vigorously shaken and vibrated. But despite this process a 'homeopathic' remedy is only such, if it is prescribed on the basis of certain principles.
  4. An assessment/consultation by a homeopath differs very much from a doctor's visit. Homeopaths perceive and recognise disease patterns. These patterns will occasionally overlap  and be similar to recognised conventional diagnoses of illness. But frequently, the information that a homeopath considers relevant and central to the prescription of an appropriate remedy, is irrelevant or even dismissed by orthodox medicine. For example, subjective experience of illness is key in homeopathic understanding of illness. So a person who has a headache can be prescribed any one of of several hundred different remedies depending on the individual headache. All people suffer differing headaches. So it doesn't to make sense to use one generic drug for that particular ailment: Headaches can be hormonal or injury related, stress or tension related. The can arise from dehydration or difficulties with posture. They can be due to eye-strain, connected with epilepsy, brain tumours and the list goes on an on. Headaches have a whole scale of pain raging from mild discomfort to extreme pain. From the homeopathic point of view, one medicine for all these differing types of complaint makes no sense. A solution must be tailor-made for that particular person and the 'story' behind their complaint.
  5. Diagnosis is not necessary in order to choose a treatment. Treatment is based on information acquired from the patient about all aspects of their health. Appetite, thirst, sleep, family history, personality, emotional stresses, previous accident and injury and surgeries, digestive functioning,  as well as the presenting complaint and current illness, are all taken as markers for correct prescriptions.
  6. Homeopathy is holistic in its approach. One part of the body must be connected to the whole. A disease in one part affects the whole. One cannot treat one illness and then perceive no link with another illness ensuing in the same body afterward.
  7. Homeopathy has a set of guiding principles which allows practitioners to tangibly measure progress and cure. Otherwise, treatment would be blind and out of context. Do this and do that and prescribe this and prescribe that, and hope that it benefits the overall health and long-term health of a person? The 'removal' of one symptom may not always have a positive result in the body, as illness moves deeper and the person develops more problems.
  8. All ingested substances have side-effects especially when taken on a prolonged basis. This applies to herbs, foods, drugs, medication, and also applies to homeopathic remedies. But homeopathic remedies pose far less risk to the body because of the method of preparation. They do not work in an organic physiologically measurable way.....they act as a stimulus to the immune system or central intelligence of the body and help it to reorganise itself in how it manages threats to healthy function. Homeopathy helps the body to consistently maintain homeostasis. The result and effect of the stimulus is noticeable, not the action of the stimulus itself. So, imagine a beautiful, tasty dinner and your mouth starts to water in physical response to that thought. You notice the effect upon yourself, but you cannot measure the 'cause' of the salivation - except you do have a suspicion as to what caused your mouth to water in the first place!

There is so much more to say. One day, hundreds of years ago, if someone had said the earth was round and not flat, we would have dismissed this as lunacy. If someone had told us many years before the invention of a microscope, that water was not empty and clear, but instead contained millions of organisms, constituents, a veritable seething amount of life within one single drop...we would have said that they were 'wrong' . As we evolve, we develop greater capacity to understand and perceive and explore. In the spirit of adventure and enquiry, openness and humility, and a desire to be of service to humanity and its troubles, homeopathy is a journey worth undertaking. For those who suffer, it is a healing balm.

Than are dreamt of in your philosophy"

Natural Remedies for Nail Biting

Many people start biting their nails in childhood and it becomes a hard habit to break! Reward and punishment, persuasion and coercion, nasty tasting substances painted on to the nails....admonishing, ignoring .... the truth is, for nail-biting adults or children very few of these methods work. Best advice is to go to the underlying cause: the nervous system.

People who bite their nails are worriers, and can become easily tense and anxious. The gesture of putting their fingers to their mouth goes right back to early childhood when a small child sometimes finds comfort and self-soothing from having their fingers, or their milk bottle, or their mother's breast, and/or their pacifier or soother in their mouth. There is a reason why these are called 'soothers' (UK & Ireland) or 'pacifiers' as this is exactly the effect of this comfort. Actually starting to bite or pull at the nails or skin around the nails is a form of mild self-harming. The feeling beneath this action needs to be addressed. A nail-biter needs to relax, feel happy with themselves and be preoccupied with other forms of habit that are self-soothing and comforting...habits which offer tenderness and peaceful love to their more sensitive selves.

There can be consequences to this habit. People who do not wash their hands regularly and then place their fingers to their mouth, can collect germs and bacteria that otherwise would not be transferred to the mouth and gums. Otherwise, it may just look unsightly and be off-putting to others as well as openly revealing one's anxiety, which can lead to increased self-consciousness and even more nail-biting.

For those keen to diminish the habit in themselves and others, here are some tips:

  1. Feed the nerves. You can helpfully supplement someone's over stretched nerves. Try a Magnesium supplement on a daily basis. Use the Schuessler Cell salt: Kali-phos 6x. This particular one is very safe for children on a more medium-term basis as it is gentle and easy and enjoyable for children to take. Take a complex B-Vitamin supplement on a daily basis which helps resilience to stress and tension.
  2. Try some Bach Flowers for personality traits which you feel are contributing to this problem. Here are some examples:  Mimulus for shyness and fear. Larch for self-confidence. Pine for guilt feelings and self-reproach. Aspen for an unidentifiable free-floating anxiety. Agrimony for suppressed feelings or attempts to run away from feelings that one cannot cope with.
Here are two homeopathic remedies which you may try. Try to find a good 'fit' or 'match' between the remedy description and how the child or person is. This will get you a better result.

How homeopathy can support parenting

Many people do not realise that homeopathy is a resource and powerful tool for life. They think of it as being a medicine or alternative treatment to seek out when nothing else works. Their use of homeopathy is purely based on attending a professional homeopath for a diagnosed illness. Homeopathy is boxed off and compartmentalised.

But homeopathy as a natural resource, is a daily help, a day-to-day-thing to have in the house especially if your household is a family. You can learn enough yourself in order to use homeopathic remedies successfully. You  can obtain a kit of remedies to have at your fingertips at home and choose a remedy to give to yourself, your partner or your child whenever the need arises. With enough basic knowledge you can develop a skill at home which means your family can go anti-biotic free for years.

So here are some of the ways in which homeopathy can transform your life as a parent, support your moments of madness and feelings of frustration and distress and address anxiety which you may have about health, germs, illness, and ease the financial burden of raising children to be healthy.
  • You can learn to use homeopathy in the home to treat many, many minor incidents of illness. For example, coughs, colds, ear infection, sore throats, chest infections, colds, flus, some accidents and minor injuries, digestive complaints such as constipation, bouts of diarrhoea, tummy bugs.
  • Using homeopathy saves you a fortune on visits to your doctor. Because homeopathy works very quickly and effectively, working parents do not have to take as much time off to rush home to a sick child or spend as much time nursing a sick child back to health.  For working parents who are under alot of pressure at work, who have used up all their holiday days and the good will of their employer...this will ease stress.
  • For attachment parenting, homeopathy is incredibly can smooth the way to successful breast-feeding (sore nipples, milk supply issues, thrush, mastitis), address sleep disturbance, tiredness. It can help a mother experience less stress for feeling isolated amidst many other mothers who are taking a different approach with their own children ..homeopathy can help with self-doubt, criticism, loneliness, vulnerability, empowerment in decision-making. It can support the parents' desire to pursue a more natural and balanced family and home life.

  • Using homeopathy changes your feelings and attitude toward sickness and also toward health. When day-to-day infectious illness is handled naturally and correctly, it can support the development of a very high-powered , strong and efficient immune system. This safeguards future health and can lead to a robust constitution. This transformation can happen even in children who are delicate. The best protection against illness in this world is not medication or even natural remedies but strong immunity.
  • Homeopathy can address side-effects and adverse effects of vaccination and immunisation. Children whose health has never been the same since vaccination or have been more seriously damaged by vaccination do not have to remain sickly for life. Parents need not feel helpless and regretful of their decision. It is never too late.
  • Homeopathy can be used for travel. Many family holidays which have been ruined by sickness, food poisoning, poisonous bites, fevers etc and would have been saved if a parent had their homeopathy kit to hand.
  • Today, many people fear germs. They fear exposure to germs as they do not trust their own body's capacity to defend itself. A sick person coughing and spluttering on a bus or a train often attracts glares and anxious looks from fellow-travellers. They resent this person for exposing everyone else to their germs.  Included in the practise of homeopathy is an understanding of susceptibility. It is a well-known fact that there is always a minority of people who do not succumb to viruses despite exposure. The key between one person succumbing to illness and another person remaining healthy is their own inner state. Preventative health care is about recognising when one is becoming vulnerable and taking steps to address it. Homeopathy really helps you to connect with the body and understand its own intelligence, its own workings! You can use remedies to re-balance issues straightaway. So remedies can address exhaustion and burn-out, over-stimulation and overwhelm, irritability and sensitivity. It can address emotional shocks, ups and downs in mood and sudden responses to difficult events. Instead of becoming sick, one can sail through the stress because of the right help and preserve the balance of the body by preserving the balance of the mind. Children benefit so much by witnessing the confidence a parent can show in often having a solution to their problems and needs. They grow up with true knowledge and the ability to take a large degree of personal responsibility for their own health.
